Brook Street

The World in our Street

Children from Chester schools learnt about the stories behind a multicultural city street.

Pupils of Chester Bluecoat CE Primary, Hoole CE Primary and Oldfield Primary school investigated Brook Street as part of an innovative project called 'The World in Our Street', offering a fascinating insight into the background of its diverse community.

The Children from Hoole and Chester Bluecoat Primary enjoyed a feast of Chicken Korma, rice and naan breads by Chester Tandoori and the children from Oldfield Primary school spent a morning in Brook Street playing bowls on the Bowling Green at St Werburghs Parish Centre, seeing how Tutus are made at Trudi's Tutus, designing their own comics at Chester Comic Company and helping in the kitchen at The Istanbul BBQ.

The businesses who have shared their stories include Scope, Maltby's, Thai Namoon, Istanbul BBQ, Party Balloons, McColls, Dee Sports, Chester Comic shop, Grey 'n' Pick, and residents in the Bowling Green Court.

We are extremely grateful to Cheshire Community Foundation, CWAC Promoting Equality & Diversity Fund, CWAC Councillors members budgets and The Development of the Youth of Chester for funding the project.

There are more nationalities in Brook Street than anywhere else in Chester, and the schools have been excited to find out about the huge diversity that is found in the street.  In some ways the whole world is in Brook Street and this has brought a real-life context to its social history.

Hopefully, it'll also raise awareness of diversity and how exciting this is.
